The Detox Diet

Is there such a thing as a detox diet?

A somewhat taboo topic in my opinion, due to the nature of humans believing in many different ways of moving through this life. We have the Doctors who will claim that there’s little evidence that detox diets remove toxins from the body; and that the kidneys and liver are generally quite effective at filtering and eliminating most ingested toxins.

However, if we were to look at more ancient beliefs, rituals and natural medicines there seems to be a lot of air time given to those ways of ‘cleansing’ or ‘purifying’ the body. As an integrative nutritional advisor and someone who has created space for both ways of healing my body of many things, what I can say for sure is that the body has an innate ability to heal and with the right knowledge, environment, and intentions behind the
practices you choose, you can work towards your balanced self.

So lets look at the Doctors side first; yes your body is very capable of using its very own organs to ‘detox’ the body of anything that won’t serve it – however is we are going out every night, loading our liver and lungs with alcohol and cigarets we are indeed, making the job a lot harder for our bodies to thrive (even more so if we have a compromised immune system, to begin with)

Another topic to be aware of, is the way our food is being made nowadays, and not just focusing on glorifying/demonising one kind of veg (so please kale, can you and your marketing team sit down for a second) It’s not that bread is bad or meat is going to disrupt your hormones, it is, in fact, the way those goods have been farmed with chemicals and pesticides that can make the natural detoxication of the body, a lot tricky and create a more sluggish system than someone who is supporting their body with conscious habits.
To conclude, no there is not a detox diet only a conscious and educated consumer.
